PROGRAM FORMAT
Each 30-minute edition seeks to expose the character, drive and ambition of individuals highly recognized for their leadership in guiding local, national and international organizations, in both the public and private sectors.
The program is taped before an audience of WSU students, who have the opportunity to ask leadership questions directly to the guest for potential use in the broadcast program. There is also an informal, not-for-broadcast discussion between the guest and our students following the taping. This is always a rewarding part of the program for guests and students, as well as faculty who often attend. They enjoy, and benefit from, their personal interaction with executives at this level.
"We're really happy with our guest list. Some top people have committed to this," said Jeff Forster, Vice President of Production and Station Enterprise for Detroit Public TV. For this sixth season, executives such as Stephen R. Polk (Chairman, CEO, and President - R. L. Polk & Co.), George Perry (President and CEO - Yazaki North America), Nancy Brown (CEO - American Heart Association) and a whole host of similarly impressive executives have agreed to be on the program.
"If we're talking about leadership, these are the real leaders. You like what they do. You don't like what they do. They have critics, supporters and fans. But at the end of the day, these are some of the real leaders in the real world," noted Larry L. Fobes.
HOST BIOGRAPHY
Larry Fobes is Director of the Wayne State University, School of Business Administration’s “Institute for Organizational & Industrial Competitiveness (IOIC)”. His graduate work includes an engineering masters from Wayne State University, and an MBA from Duke University.
He created, hosts, and co-produces with Detroit Public Television, the Emmy award winning television series, “Leaders on Leadership”. Leaders from a wide range of global organizations share their leadership experiences and insights with a studio audience of students, and broadcast viewers in selected markets of the US, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and coast-to-coast Canada.
His corporate experience includes 30 years service at Ford Motor Company in product design, scientific research, operational finance, and global business strategy. Larry built and led a globally dispersed team supporting 150 national markets on 5 continents for 8 Ford corporate brands.
HISTORY OF LEADERS ON LEADERSHIP
The original concept for the program was fairly straightforward: a room and an audience. But business professionals with ties to the school encouraged Fobes to distribute it to a wider audience. "We discussed a couple of options, one of which was Channel 56, because it seemed to fit," he recalled.
Fobes met with the president and general manager of Detroit Public TV in the fall of 2002. He liked the idea, and when Forster joined the station in 2003, the program began to take shape. The initial broadcast was in 2004, and it has been continuously aired ever since. There are 18 original episodes each season.
UNDERWRITING
Beginning with the fifth season, the show’s production costs are underwritten by Greenleaf Trust, Michigan's first "trust-only bank" specializing in asset management and trust services. They are based in Kalamazoo, Michigan and with offices across Michigan in Holland, Petosky, Taverse City, and Birmingham. Their generous support not only enables the show to continue, but provides funding for significant upgrades to the show’s production values, expansion to potential new markets, and a whole host of related initiatives now being developed.
"Greenleaf Trust's culture compels us to seek alignment with organizations and initiatives that have a positive impact in communities," said Mark Jannott, Greenleaf Trust Senior Vice President and also a member of the board of Detroit Public Television.
"We're focused on the wonderful partnership that ‘Leaders on Leadership’ affords Wayne State University's School of Business Administration and Detroit Public Television. The show's unique forum enables respected leaders to share how they developed and implemented success in a particular context," he added. "Greenleaf Trust is honored to provide support for this important show, and we're enthusiastic about our partnership going forward."
FUTURE OF LEADERS ON LEADERSHIP
"Leaders on Leadership" continues to evolve and improve. It is now broadcast in other Michigan markets through WGVK in Kalamazoo and WGVU in Grand Rapids. And, beginning this season, all programs will be taped on the Wayne State University campus. This is intended to enable students, faculty, staff, and alumni to more easily participate with the show, and place the Wayne State campus on an international stage.
In addition, Fobes, Forster and the team hope to produce a DVD compilation and a book based on the program. Together, these reference guides could be used as instructional tools for classes at WSU and other universities across the nation, and provide a means to continue the growth of the Leaders on Leadership brand.
"This is a wonderful opportunity, working with the business school at Wayne State, which has tremendous credibility not only here in Detroit, but also all over the country and world. We've been able to leverage that credibility with the great distribution system that we have here at the television station. We talk to 1.9 million families in Detroit and 2.2 million households in Canada, plus viewers in Oklahoma, Taiwan, Korea, and Hong Kong." Forster pointed out.
